SIZE GUIDE

We are dedicated to assisting you in finding the perfect fit on your first try. To ensure this, we have provided individual sizing charts for each jacket, coat, and waistcoat style. It is important to understand that our leather garments are meticulously crafted from tailored leather panels, which lack the elastic properties commonly found in modern fabrics like jumpers, stretchy tops, tunic-style tops, or loose-fitting tops. Therefore, when selecting a size for a leather garment, it is advisable to consider your usual size for jackets or suits that do not have stretch properties. In other words, you should identify your jacket size and the size you typically purchase or fluctuate between (excluding sizes that you have managed to fit into on rare occasions, as they may not accurately represent your regular wardrobe sizing).

Garment Fit Styles

The third bullet point indicates each garment’s ‘fit style’, showing the extra room allowance beyond the ‘To Fit Chest Size’ specified for each jacket design. The fit style types and their definitions are as follows:

  • Fitted / Fashion Fitted – designed to provide a snug fit, this style usually tapers at the waist by 5 – 6 inches. Individuals with an average build who prefer a slightly fitted look that allows for a thin sweater and a bit of extra room should generally opt for the larger size, similar to a tailored jacket (for example, if you fluctuate between a size 10 and 12, you would choose size 10 for a tight fit without any room allowance, or size 12 for a smart semi-fitted look). Individuals with a larger build may need to go up 2 sizes. We recommend checking your actual chest, waist, and tummy measurements. If the tummy or waist measurement is larger than the chest, this garment style may not be suitable.
  • Semi-fitted – shaped clothing with enough room to wear a slim top or thin knit jumper to give a slim fitting. The style of the garment will shrink in the waist by four inches or so, and the hem will be roughly the same width, or perhaps about 1/8 inch bigger over the chest. If your measurement of the waist or tummy is greater than the chest measurement, this design will not be suitable for you if you intend to tie the jacket.
  • Regular fit Regular Fit intelligent fit with ample to fit a knit jumper, if the waist and tummy measurements are between 2 and 4 inches wider that your chest.
  • Comfort Fit – to allow comfort when wearing a standard jumper (not a chunky jumper),these garments tend to be straight cut. If the waist or tummy measurement is wider than the chest you will need to order the corresponding size to this measurement.
  • A generous Comfort fit – provide more space for the suit jacket or fleece jacket. Certain people will have to order one or two sizes smaller in these types of clothes in case they have a slim or average body. If your measurement of the waist or tummy is larger than your chest, you’ll need to purchase the appropriate size for the measurement.

Each size chart provides an estimate of the ‘To Fit Chest’ size along the top row, serving as an initial reference point.

When you choose a size from the chart and see a range in the ‘to fit chest’ field (e.g. 38″- 40″ chest), it indicates the approximate chest width that the size will accommodate based on a medium build and average height. The size will provide a regular fit for a 38″ chest and a slim fit for a 40″ chest. We also offer a sleeve adjustment and tailoring service for those looking for a shorter sleeve length within our range, as well as a made-to-measure option for selected garments. If you require a longer sleeve length, please specify this in the ‘comments’ section of the order page, and we will verify the sleeve length before dispatching your order.

The size chart includes the average and approximate external dimensions of the leather garment, providing an indication of its maximum size. These dimensions are meant to facilitate comparison with your own well-fitting jackets or coats. Additionally, if the jacket, coat, or waistcoat is padded, you should account for a 1-2″ reduction in the external chest and waist width. This means that the inside circumference of the garment will be 1″ to 2″ smaller if it has a padded or quilted lining (e.g., 1″ less for a lightly padded lining, 2″ less for a thickly padded lining).

How to Check Your Size

Note for Men’s Styles: To determine the appropriate size of a leather jacket for men, it is recommended to refer to their size in a suit jacket. This information is typically found inside one of the interior pockets, or in the collar or side tags. Generally, men do not need to measure their chest unless they experience tightness in jackets due to having a broader than standard chest, a muscular torso from regular workouts, or being overweight. In most cases, men are already aware of their chest size in suits and tops, which serves as a sufficient guide.

When it comes to selecting a jacket, one of the key areas to consider is the stomach region. If the chosen style appears fitted on the model around the stomach and waist area, it may not be suitable for men with a portly figure or a protruding tummy. For individuals with such body types, it is advisable to measure the tummy area over a normal top using a tape measure that touches all the way around. If the tummy measurement is wider than their chest size, it is important to choose a size that is not smaller than the tummy measurement. Additionally, it is recommended to opt for a style that is not fitted around the stomach area, as these styles are typically ‘V’ shaped and may not accommodate an ‘apple’ shape.

MEN’S – Sizing Guidelines:

Kindly be aware that suit or jacket sizes may differ across brands, so having the most recent accurate chest measurement at the broadest point for the individual who will wear the jacket can assist in choosing the correct size. Please note that if the person’s waist or abdomen area is wider than the chest, this measurement should be considered when determining the necessary jacket chest size for fastening the jacket.

Request Guidance

If you find yourself in between sizes or need assistance determining the best size for you, kindly include the following details in the Special Instructions box during the checkout process:

  • Chest measurement – current and accurate chest measurement:
  • Waist measurement (at the widest point – crucial for jacket fastening):
  • Typically used size.
In addition, you have the option to furnish measurements from a well-fitting jacket or coat. Ensure that the garment is fastened with either a zipper or buttons and is placed flat on a surface such as a table or floor. Prior to taking any measurements, please ensure that the garment is completely flat and free from any ripples on the underside.

1) Bust – measuring from underarm to underarm (to determine the width of the jacket when laid flat):

2) Waist Measurement – the distance from one edge of the waist to the other, taken at the narrowest point.

3) Coats and long jackets designed for individuals with narrow hips will have a smaller width across the widest part of the hips.

NOTE 1: Please ensure that you email the provided flat measurements to Men’s Leather Jacket UK so that we can verify the appropriate size for the jacket or coat style you intend to purchase. Kindly include the flat garment measurement, along with the name of the garment style and color you desire. Additionally, please provide your height, trouser size, bra size (including cup), usual size in tops/jackets (and any variations by brand), and desired fit. We appreciate your cooperation.

NOTE 2: Please be aware that the size chart provided on each product page specifies the ‘to fit chest’ measurement, which corresponds to the individual’s actual chest measurement over clothing (with the tape touching). It is important to note that the ‘to fit chest’ size does not match the external flat dimensions of the garment listed above. Keep in mind that slim fit garments have a minimal space allowance and typically narrow into the waist by approximately 4 – 5″ (10-12cm). Semi-fitted garments offer a smart fit with a bit more room to accommodate a thin smart fit pullover, but also narrow into the waist slightly. Comfort fit garments are straight cut from the chest to the waist, providing more room for a jumper; therefore, ordering a larger size is unnecessary unless the stomach area is wider than the chest size. Loose fit garments are designed to allow for a suit jacket or blazer underneath, so individuals who plan to wear a regular fine knit wool jumper may consider sizing down by 1 size if the stomach area is not wider than the ‘to fit chest’ size.

Wrong Size?

If the leather feels slightly tight or snug, we recommend keeping it as the leather will stretch a bit over time, similar to a shoe.

If the garment is noticeably uncomfortable or difficult to fasten, it is advisable to get a new size.

With each increase in size, you can expect approximately a 2-inch increase in the chest and waist measurements. The shoulder width will only slightly widen by ¼ inch on each side, and the sleeve length may increase by about ¼ to ½ inch.

In certain cases, you may find yourself between two sizes. If you need to go up a size in the chest but want to keep the shoulder and sleeve measurements the same, please inform us when requesting an exchange. We will check our available stock to find a suitable replacement for you.
